NDT Jobs and Careers

Preparing for your NDT Work Search

There are an estimated 60,000 NDT professionals working within the United States. Demand for experienced NDT professionals is very high but, for people just entering the profession, it can be harder to get the work and gain the hands-on experience that employers and clients are looking for. Demand is expected to continue to increase as the Baby Boom generation begins to retire, however, and as the need for NDT services continues to grow. For instance, in 2014, the average age of Level III NDT professionals was 56.

The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) provides an NDT Career Resource Center that offers helpful tips, information and insights to make your job search successful.

NDT Wages and Salary

Personnel for Quality and Nondestructive Testing (PQNDT) conducts annual salary surveys of the NDT industry.

In 2014, NDT average salaries in the US ranged from $63,000 (Level I) to over $111,000 (Level III). Those with specialized training (API) earned over $132,000 on average.

In the same year, NDT salaries were highest in the Petrochemical Industry and in the Northeastern States (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont).
